Signature Salon for February – Bliss Skin & Body

This month, Kellie Pickels of Bliss Skin Care & Body shares her passion for all things skin.

Q: How long have you been in business and what drew you to the beauty industry in the first place?

A: We celebrated our 10th year anniversary on December 1st 2011! I was looking for a career that allowed me to be around people. I like interacting with others & love taking care of people – I still LOVE my hands on role as therapist!

Q: What do you value the most in your business?

A: The happiness of the team and my clients is of utmost importance to me.

Q: How do you find the right balance between your personal and professional life?

A: I try to give 100% to what I am doing at that point in time- if I am at home with the kids I focus on them & when I am in the salon my attention is there (knowing that the kids are well cared for at home)

Q: How has dermaviduals assisted your business?

A: I have 100% faith in dermaviduals – A product that actually does what is claims to do which is help the skin to be its absolute BEST! dermaviduals has corrected the skin of our most sensitive clients as well as achieving fantastic results for clients with a variety of skin types/conditions. Introducing dermaviduals to our clients has further reiterated that at bliss we are SERIOUS about taking care of our clients’ skin & they trust us to do so.

Q: Being based in regional Australia has advantages and disadvantages. What attracts you to this area?

A: I love being part of a community where you get to know the locals. We get to know our customers & they become our friends. Seeing our clients on an ongoing basis makes treating skin their conditions easier allowing for better results – it is very rewarding to know you have helped someone feel happier about themselves!

Q: What keeps you inspired professionally?

A:People!! Clients, team members & others I meet along the way. I love hearing their stories – there are some amazing women out there.

EDUCATION…training….This is MAJOR. I am always looking for ways to improve. The introduction of dermaviduals & MAX+ has really inspired me. It is a perfect fit for Bliss!! – My MOJO is PUMPING!!

Q: If you had one piece of advice for people considering a career in the beauty industry, what would it be?

A: Quite simply – you have to like people & like helping people. To help your clients the best you can, you need to understand that continuous learning is part of your career.

I would say to someone wanting to enter the beauty industry that you need to be committed & prepared to put in the extra hours/hard work initially in order to become the best therapist you can be – once you have found your niche (skin, make-up, waxing etc) study hard so you can become the BEST at it….you can then spend your days doing what you love the most! Your clients will love you for it!

Q: New products and equipment enter the beauty industry almost daily. How do you keep up with this and how do you determine what is hype and what is genuine?

A: I steer clear of fad treatments. My focus is on skin & achieving results for my clients in a SAFE & NON-intrusive way. I WON’T perform (or introduce to the salon) any treatment which I wouldn’t happily have myself (or wouldn’t do on my mum!). The health & safety of my clients is top priority- my clients trust ME to take care of them.
We stick to what we know best, the skin.

Q: You have just celebrated the 10th birthday for your salon- congratulations. You would have seen many changes in the industry over your first ten years. What are some of the aspects you are looking forward to in the foreseeable future?

A: Lots of changes over past 10 years as far as products & equipment go however our focus is still the same- to provide excellent customer service.

My focus for 2012 is education – I want my team to be 100% happy & confident in all areas of their role at Bliss. My aim is to have the people of Albury- Wodonga talking about Bliss & what we offer – I want everyone to know how serious we are about skin care – we want to be known as the skin experts! I think dermaviduals & MAX can help us to achieve this!!

What the Experts are saying

How Do You Define Perfect Flawless Skin

Dec 08, 2011 Skin Care by Jennifer Brodeur

From a porcelain complexion, to plump moisturized skin, here is what “superfacialists”, from five countries, are revealing about what’s considered beautiful in their countries and what women really want.

Here are a few clear winners:

How do you define perfect flawless skin? Does it even exist? If you flip through the pages of pretty much any beauty magazine, you may think perfect skin is narrowly defined…but that’s not the case.  It’s both intriguing and enlightening to ask “superfacialists” what perfect skin is for them and their clients.

From a porcelain complexion, to plump moisturized skin, here is what “superfacialists”, from five countries, are revealing about what’s considered beautiful in their countries and what women really want.

Here are a few clear winners:

Passionate about skin care Erika Zodtner has been in the field since 2004, she owns FIRM LA located in Beverly Hills, California. Her clients are all unique, however, they are all striving for perfect skin. They are not so much interested in the procedure versus the results. Most of her clients want to look “fresh” as opposed to “done”. Erika’s clients ask mostly for firming and tightening around neck and jowls. Biggest skin care concerns are acne, pigment problems, pore size, fine lines and wrinkles and sagging!

In 1987, Denise Dubois opened Complexions Spa for Beauty & Wellness in Albany NY. Denise, a leader in our industry, owns the first and only LEED Gold Spa & Salon in NY. In awe of all her achievements, I could not help but ask her what unique needs her clients have. Her answer may surprise you.

“I don’t feel my clients needs are unique but rather they come to us for clarity as to what the ideal choice of treatment is for them . We have always focused on educating our clients on the health benefits of our services…we emphasis a lot of time and attention to the consultation so that we can identify their needs and expectations, as a result we achieve the desired outcome and a happy client.  One of the most common concerns for most people is irregular pigmentation including redness and brown spots. IPL photo rejuvenation is an excellent choice as is chemical exfoliation with a variety of different solution options. IPL targets red vessels, as well as pigmentation and chemical exfoliation can address pigmentation and fine lines. Both treatments provide collagen stimulation for skin texture improvement. Together, I think both modalities compliment the results of the other.”

Denise, now divides her time between Albany and an office in New York City, feels the needs are similar for clients in the city vs. Albany in that everyone desires a youthful appearance. The biggest challenge with her clients, in the city, is air pollution, the environment and stress levels. All contribute to free radical damage and need to be address head on with the appropriate treatment protocol. Denise believes in synergy using the most effective home care with a variety of professional in office procedures.

Managing partners Simone Vescio and Reika Roberts (Derma Aesthetics- distributors of Dermaviduals across Australia & New Zealand) feel that every client is unique as no two people have the same skin or skin concerns – Dermaviduals is a bespoke skin correction system. They believe in customizing their products for specific skin conditions, not applying a blanket approach to their formulations.

Clients are all looking for results, results, results and education. As distributors, they are committed to cutting edge educational programs, which allow their therapists to make informed decisions rather than being subjected to hype or hollow promises.

“Skin barrier disruption causing sensitivity often hailing from incorrect product use, as well as exposure to product ranges not suited to the skin type. We see a lot of damage from over exfoliation, aggressive chemical peels and of course in Australia and New Zealand, general environmental damage. When the skin’s barrier is disrupted, skin is not protected from environmental stress & pollution, and it loses its ability to protect and defend itself. Perfumes, preservatives and emulsifiers can all cause skin barrier disturbance leading to irritation, so the scientists at Dermaviduals incorporate a ‘DMS’ dermal membrane structure into the products, which mimics the structure and function of the skin. A pure and natural skin care concept signaling the future of skin care has arrived, and we are delighted to educate and inform people about corneotherapy and skin correction.” Says Reika Roberts. Visit www.dermaviduals.com.au for further details.

Fred Grönroosin owner of Elcos Medical in Helsinki, Finland, introduced me to skincare extraordinaire Jaana. So sought after for her innovative anti-aging treatments that her location doesn’t have any signage. I was fortunate enough to receive one of her facials, 120 minutes of pure bliss. According to Jaana, Finnish women are still very private about their beauty routines, and any procedures. They feel no need to divulge any of their secrets. To achieve perfect flawless skin Jaana insists on the importance of appropriate skin care for their Nordic climate.

Francoise opened Essentielle Soins Esthétiques in 2002. Essentielle is located in Sens-Sur-Yonne, Bourgogne France. For Francoise performing a facial is an art. There is a technique for everything. Her goal is for all of her clients to leave with glowing skin. France is no different from the rest of the world. French women are more and more conscious of what’s available on the market, they Google and research. They want an accurate skin analysis with skin care strategies.

Sydney International Spa & Beauty Expo

Sydney International Spa & Beauty Expo

This annual exposition is a must-attend event for retailers, suppliers, educators or anyone with a general interest in the beauty and cosmetic industry.  It is the ideal forum in which to showcase (and learn about) emerging trends and new products entering the marketplace.   This year, derma aesthetics was thrilled to welcome to our stand, Deborah Thomas – ACP’s General Manager of Media & Public Affairs.  Over a course of several hours, Deborah’s expertise was evident.  She has over 20 years experience in magazine publishing and a thorough knowledge of the beauty industry.  During a stint on centre stage, the crowd were mesmerised as she spoke of the future of magazine publishing, in particular how we can form lasting relationships with editors by getting the balance between advertising and editorial right.  She gave an overview on the importance of good skin care routines and her thoughts on emerging trends and issues in the beauty and cosmetic industries.

We also genuinely enjoyed catching up with many of you from around the country, meeting new customers, chatting with old friends and sharing the latest product news from the wonderful world of derma aesthetics.

Signature Salon for November- Asthetique Beauty

This month, Shellie Pearson of Asthetique Skin Care shares her passion for all things skin.

Q: How long have you been in business and what drew you to the beauty industry in the first place?

A: I have been in business for 6 years, 4 of those in my existing clinic, Asthetique Skin Care.

I was drawn to the beauty industry back in high school.  I have always struggled with problematic skin and have wanted to correct it, understand how and why skin behaves and help others in the same situation.  Skin has always been my real passion.

Q: What do you value the most in your business?

A: Definitely staff are my number one priority, with clients a very close number two.  Without my wonderful staff I would not be where I am today.

Q: How do you find the right balance between your personal and professional life?

A: This is something that will always remain a juggling act.  It doesn’t matter what type of work a mother does, the balance between family & work will always need to be worked on.

I definitely could not do what I do without the support of my husband and again, my staff.

Q: How has dermaviduals assisted your business?

A: dermaviduals has been a great addition to my business.

It has been very exciting for me to find a company and product  that believe in what I do and perform to get the results I strive for. Keeping the skin’s health and integrity at all times is paramount to what I do and education, education, education!

Q: Being based in regional Australia has advantages and disadvantages.  What attracts you to this area?

A: I am a country girl so family & friends attract me to the area.

Q: What keeps you inspired professionally?

You can never stop learning!  I love to study & learn.

It is also the results you achieve with your clients.  There is nothing more rewarding than helping someone overcome a skin condition or just making someone feel better about themselves.

Q: If you had one piece of advice for people considering a career in the beauty industry, what would it be?

A: Have a real passion for it.

Q: New products and equipment enter the beauty industry almost daily.  How do you keep up with this and how do you determine what is hype and what is genuine?

A: Research, research, research.  If you don’t know about something then learn about it.  I also seek advice from other professionals in the industry as well as people in business in general.  95% of this industry is hype.  I definitely trust my gut instinct & am not forced into anything I don’t feel comfortable with.

Dermaviduals Team Visits Germany

In late September, Simone Vescio and Reika Roberts, along with three clients, travelled to Germany to koko dermaviduals headquarters.

Justine Bell, Bliss Skin & Body in Albury; Rebecca Miller, La Bella Beauty & Spa in Parkes; Dr Hans Lautenschläger, koko dermaviduals, Germany; Robyn McAlpine, Laser Effect in Newcastle.

The trip commenced with a two day corneotherapy course conducted by Dr Hans Lautenschläger, founder of dermaviduals. Overviewing the principles of the range and moving through into much detail of the active ingredients, the team found it refreshing to gain an update from the person behind the formulations.

Choosing between skin analysis from Florence Barrett-Hill or a further day at the Corneotherapy Institute was not an easy choice, so the group split and enjoyed the information they learned.

koko dermaviduals then treated them to a facial in their institute. After each intensive day of learning, the ladies had early nights to keep their minds fresh, with the exception of the VIP dinner where partners from around the world, including Russia, New York, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand celebrated a successful year and the future of skincare with dermaviduals at the helm.

Robyn McAlpine, from Laser Effect, said of the trip, “What a privilege to be invited to go to Germany. Touring head office and meeting the faces behind this wonderful product was an amazing experience. Spending time at koko, you come to learn that Dr Lautenschläger is an extremely talented and gifted person but also a very humble man who designs his products with the utmost of integrity, with your results in mind. To be amongst the “royalty” of our industry was such an honour. dermaviduals have created such a wonderful opportunity for their stockists to work towards. Set your targets and make sure you put this on your list of goals to achieve as you will never look back, this is the trip of your career.”

While, Justine Bell, Bliss Skin & Body, Albury, remarked, “If I was to describe my amazing trip to Germany I would have to say I learnt so much more about the company and meeting Dr Lautenschläger made me realise how passionate he is about skin correction and making sure that the products pure and correct before they are released to the public with has given me 100% faith in dermaviduals… It has inspired me to further my knowledge as I am looking into doing some advance skin analysis courses in the upcoming months.”

Another trip will be planned for March 2013 and will be open to all dermaviduals stockists. The loyalty program enables salons to build points toward the trip or even have the trip fully paid. You can also join dermaviduals as a fully paid guest.

Hot products? Even experts such as Deborah Thomas are excited by dermaviduals

Dermaviduals Anti-wrinkle Serum

Dermaviduals anti-wrinkle serum contains Spilanthol, a ground-breaking natural plant extract which is set to take the cosmetic industry by storm.

Unlike its synthetic counterpart (the potentially damaging Botox), Spilanthol contains only pure, natural ingredients easily recognised by the skin.  Its unique anti-ageing ingredients relax facial muscle contractions creating a visibly smoother facial tone and complexion.

NEW to Australia, dermaviduals is an internationally-renowned product range, which has been developed to complement and maintain the natural structure of the skin.  Unlike any other cosmetic product on the market, it contains no emulsifiers, preservatives, parabens, fragrance, colours, mineral oils or sulphates, all of which can be potentially harmful or damaging to the skin.

At dermaviduals we don’t believe in a blanket approach to skin care.  Rather, we have developed a base cream which can be mixed with over 40 different serums, each of which has a unique function.  This delivery system means that skin treatment therapists can individually adapt in-salon treatments and home care programmes to treat specific skin conditions.

Importantly, the ‘delivery system’ of the serums enables direct penetration of the active ingredients.  Once released, these ‘actives’ safely permeate through the skin barrier, providing an accurate and responsive delivery system.

dermaviduals is committed to the principles of corneotherapy, which is the science of maintaining and restoring healthy skin.  This is one step beyond cosmeceutical skin care.  Instead, dermaviduals offers dermatological excellence. That is, each of our products assists with the recovery of the stratum corneum, thereby improving the function of the skin barrier and overall homeostasis.

At dermaviduals, we realise that, like fingerprints, everyone has different skin and each of our products reflect this individuality.  It’s bespoke skin care at its best and is NOT sold on the Internet. We encourage you to phone us today and start experiencing the dermaviduals difference…

Finally! A product as individual as you are…

Blog by the Professional Beauty, POSTED 23.05.2011

NEW to Australia, dermaviduals DMS base cream is an internationally renowned product, which has been developed to complement and maintain the natural structure of the skin.  Unlike any other cosmetic product in the marketplace, it contains no emulsifiers, preservatives, parabens, fragrance, colours, mineral oils or sulphates, all of which can be potentially harmful or damaging to the skin.

The advantage of this unique cream is that it’s designed to act as a base, or “delivery vehicle” to which therapists can then add a range of specific dermaviduals serums dependent on their customers individual skin condition and type.  Gone are the days of a blanket approach to skin care. With around 40 serums to choose from, each has its own unique function. Importantly, the serums are encapsulated in liposomes or nanoparticles.  These fuse with the barrier layers of the skin enabling direct penetration of the active ingredients.  Once released, these actives safely permeate through the skin barrier, providing an accurate and responsive delivery system.
